Media is an agent of socialization and unless you are currently living under a rock, you are consuming some sort of media daily. With all of the various messages that we are sent, it is important to examine them critically. Let's face facts, a lot of the time when we are watching television, movies or reading magazine and books, we are seeking junk food for the brain, because life can occasionally suck. But the very vehicle that we use for escape plays a large part in making this world so very difficult for many. Media is something that we take for granted and because it is so pervasive, it often forms the basis of what most people think. Do you know anyone that does their own thinking anymore, or do must people just regurgitate nonsense and hope that they sound smart?
Holly and I identify as feminists and womanists. This does not mean that we are completely humorless, bitchy and mean, but we are realists. You cannot consume media and divorce it from the world it came from -- no matter how many feel good ice cream eating, pajama pants wearing days it gives you on a couch. Ooops I forgot those moments when you are just so overwhelmed that you cry. Yes, we all occasionally need a moment and so you will have to talk amongst yourselves while we gather our girlie emotions together.
