Mad Men: The Rejected

I think this week's episode of Mad Men was very much about evolution.  The episode began  typically, with Roger and Don on the phone with Don Gardner Jr, trying to convince him that they were not over billing him for lucky strikes advertising.  They used charm to smooth things over with the client, even though they were completely in the wrong.

This episode seemed to be fairly well divided between Peggy and Pete.  Pete was told that he had to fall on his sword and get rid of Clearasil -- an account given to him by his father in-law.  When he tried to tell Lane about about the personal sacrifices he had gone through to attain the account, he was told  simply as a matter of business, the company was going with Ponds because it offered more money.   When he sat down with his father in-law Tom, he was told that Trudy was pregnant and he didn't have a chance to deliver the news.  I was actually quite surprised to see that Pete was happy about this, given that he has never acknowledged his son with Peggy and had been previously very firm about not starting a family with Trudy in the past seasons.

The following night he had his in-laws over for dinner and he told Tom about the conflict and demanded to be given more accounts, to which his father in-law responded simply by calling him a son of a bitch.  It seems that Pete no longer feels that he has to kiss his father in laws ass.  It seems as though now that he is a full fledged partner he feels as though he has finally come to maturity.  I am quite sure this will lead to an even less sympathetic Pete.

For the last few weeks Peggy has been struggling with her relationship with her boyfriend.  This week she took a completely different approach and instead moved into a younger, more energetic scene.  She ended up at a party with Joyce an assistant photo editor with Life magazine.  Peggy ends up at a wild party.  When Joyce licks her cheek, Peggy is clearly taken a back.  I have to say when Joyce says, "Your vagina does not belong to your boyfriend."  I was ready to cheer. It is clear she wants more than friendship and this is possibly why Peggy responded that, "he is renting it."

The next day when Peggy finds out that Pete's wife is pregnant, she is clearly shocked.  She congratulates Pete.  It almost seems as though this is an effort to convince herself that not only is she a different person, she has a different life now. Between them is the weight of everything that they have shared, including the child that neither of them ever speak about.  When Peggy returns to her office she bangs her head on the desk as some sort of weird resignation.

A write up on this episode would not be complete without some kind of commentary on what occured between Don and Allison.  Allison is forced to participate in a focus group about beauty rituals.  As she listens to Dottie complain about how her boyfriend never noticed her.  Allison leaves the room crying, knowing that she cannot say anything because Don is listening.  When Peggy goes to comfort her, she tells her about what happened between her that Don and Peggy and then implies that Don and Peggy also slept together.  Peggy denies this allegation by stating, "Your problems are not my problems" before marching back to her office.

Allison meets Don in his office, where she tells him that she is leaving and asks for a letter of recommendation.  When he tells her write it up and he will sign it, she becomes enraged and whips a paper weight at him, just missing.  I know that I am not the only one that wished it had landed square in the middle of his forehead.  She tells him that he is mean and storms out.  Later that night he starts to write an apology letter and just ends up scrunching it up and lying down on the couch.  It seems that everyone is getting on with their life and Don keeps getting older and older as the season progresses.  For the first time ever someone is commenting on his drinking and he has always kept a strict seperation between work and play.  It seems that all around him is caving in.and he is starting to look like a very different man from season one.  His tortured, complex and twisted past is coming back to haunt him.
