What to Expect from Season 2 of Glee -- Creator and Cast Reveal Secrets at Comic Con

Fans of the hit Fox show Glee waited for hours at Comic Con last Sunday to hear from the creator of the show, Ryan Murphy, as well as from the cast members, where they answered questions on what viewers can expect to see throughout season two. Surprisingly, they gave a good amount of the upcoming plot's details away, some really exciting (an episode that will pay tribute to The Rocky Horror Picture Show) and others, kind of dull and even unnecessary.

Ryan Murphy said that the theme of the second season of Glee is 'Do you have what it takes to win?' and will pick up at the beginning of a new school year. After the New Directions glee club came in third place at Regionals, they will enter back into school as even bigger losers than they were before.

Is he serious? They have to start all the way at the very bottom of the high school popularity totem pole again? All of their embarrassment, awkwardness, hard work and camaraderie from the first season seems almost pointless with how low these kids will be at the start of this school year. I wonder what Sue Sylvester would even be able to do to bring the spirits of these kids (and their glee club coach Will Schuester, of course) down any further than they will be at the start of this season. However, I'm sure these kids will indeed "have what it takes to win." I mean, they have to, right? Unless Ryan Murphy was one of those guys in high school who picked on the "weird" kids and is really just driving the nail into the coffin and out of the other side with Glee. Maybe he has ulterior motives! Nevertheless, "climbing up from the embarrassing abyss" will surely provide enough content and complexity to fill a good amount of the upcoming season.

There are also a few twists in relationships and love interests in the second season of Glee, which is to be expected. For one, Tina will fall out of love with Artie, which disappoints me because I really loved them together and Artie is such a cute and lovable character that I really hope he isn't getting his heart broken. For fans of Brittany and Santana, the two cheerleaders who are also part of the New Directions glee club but are depicted as being very clueless, dim teenage girls who, of course, are also the only girls who are open to their sexuality, will see a little more of them this season. In fact, the writers of the show are currently considering adding an episode where Santana and Brittany kiss. While I am all about more gay and bisexual people being depicted in television shows, and to Glee's credit they do have the character of Kurt, who is a really awesome character despite the fact that he is very much a stereotype of a flamboyantly gay man, I really hope that the writers behind Glee can iron out two girls kissing in one episode, which I am assuming will only happen once and will not spark a romance, before even thinking of filming it. I don't think I can take having to see yet another show introduce the scenario of a lesbian kiss that is being used more as a ploy to get the attention of some guy. That has been done and overdone and it always makes me very sad. On the topic of gay characters, it is known that Rachel Berry has two gay dads, but we never see them, it has just been said repeatedly throughout the first season. Ryan Murphy hinted at the idea of more characters being introduced to the show, Rachel's two gay dads being two of those characters, which I think could be very cool.

What was most disappointing to hear about the second season is that they plan to cut back on the musical numbers throughout the show, claiming that the new season "will be more intimate and less flashy." Ryan Murphy wants to make the show more about the characters and less about the theatrics of the musical numbers, which I can understand to a certain extent, but still, Glee is what made choir sorta-kinda cool and the choir nerd inside of me that had died when I was in tenth grade really, really loved Glee for that. That choir nerd felt vindicated and she smiled with delight every week when Glee aired several scenes of stages, lights, costumes, singing and dancing goodness.

There have been a lot of rumors spread around about Justin Timberlake making a guest appearance on the show, but Ryan Murphy said that it was not planned. However, Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth will continue to make guest appearances, but will not become regulars of the show. The real guest appearances, Murphy said, are the tribute episodes, and let me just say that I am super excited about an entire episode that will pay tribute to The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I can barely contain my excitement, yet another part of me is wondering what took so long. In other, not-so-exciting tribute show news, because seriously, what can top The Rocky Horror Picture Show, right? There will also be an episode featuring six Britney Spears songs. Hopefully this comes after the Rocky Horror episode because if we live in a world where Glee pays tribute to Britney Spears before The Rocky Horror Picture Show, that is a world I have just lost all hope in.

The second season of Glee will premiere on Fox on September 21, 2010.
